Paul Daley in the Lab
Stan Grof and Sasha Shulgin were contemporaries and colleagues in the field of consciousness research—both dedicated to rigorous inquiry, ethical practice, and the transformative potential of expanded states. They knew each other personally, appeared together at psychedelic symposiums, and shared a deep respect for each other's work.
Their approaches, though different in method, were united in purpose: mapping the vast territories of human consciousness with scientific precision and therapeutic intent.

John Stockberger

Professional musician, GLT breathwork facilitator, meditation teacher and mentor. Psychedelic preparation, integration and harm reduction provider.

Marianne Murray
Facilitator
Marianne is an eclectic and experiential practitioner in the field of learning. Her academic studies include master’s degrees in transpersonal psychology and mindfulness-based psychotherapy and a doctoral degree in transformative learning and change in human systems. Integral to her work has been her training with Stanislav Grof – she completed the Grof Transpersonal Training in 2001, is a certified GROF® Breathwork facilitator, and has facilitated holotropic breathwork in the US, UK and Europe, Kenya, and India. She is certified also as a facilitator of Bert Hellinger’s systemic constellation work and completed her training as a massage therapist, both of which inform her practice as a facilitator. Marianne had the good fortune to study with Stan during the mid-1990s, both in breathwork training and as a student at CIIS. Living into Stan’s insights on the nature of consciousness and his cartography of consciousness catalyzed not only deep personal healing, but also radically informed her work with group facilitation in the field of personal learning and change. A faculty member at the Academy for the Love of Learning in Santa Fe, New Mexico, Marianne has been intimately involved with the development of their Leading by Being curriculum and helped to establish the Academy’s overall pedagogy. Topics that motivate her include: somatic awareness as an integral aspect of learning (and un-learning) as we explore unconscious, and semi-conscious, beliefs and biases. The role of facilitator presence in individual and group learning and healing. Now in her mid-70s she can’t help but ask, too, what is the conscious completion of a life’s journey? Marianne is senior faculty/teacher for the GROF® Legacy Training USA, serves on the Board of Directors for GROF® Legacy Project, and is a Mind and Life Fellow.
Meet the Team
Grof pioneered non-pharmacological approaches, ultimately developing Holotropic Breathwork with his late wife, Christina, as a way to access profound inner territories without substances.
In the 1970's during a residency at Esalen, they created this method, describing themselves as "midwives" of a practice based on various "technologies of the sacred" used by cultures around the world since the dawn of humanity.
The term "holotropic," coined by Stan, means "moving toward wholeness" and suggests the transformative experiences this practice can catalyze.
Holotropic Breathwork quickly became a cornerstone of Grofian consciousness studies, with its potential to reach deep levels of the psyche through simple but powerful techniques.

Stan and Christina Grof at Esalen
At 94 years old, Stan continues his lifelong mission to explore consciousness and preserve his legacy. Together with his wife Brigitte, a psychologist, licensed psychotherapist, and artist, with many decades of experience in Holotropic Breathwork and holotropic states of consciousness, they launched the international Grof® Legacy Training, a comprehensive program broader than just breathwork that focuses on working with holotropic states of consciousness across many settings.
As Stan stated, "Brigitte is the person who knows me and my work best. Eventually I would like her to continue the legacy of my work."
Represented in over twenty countries, the Grof® Legacy Training authorizes skilled educators and facilitators to develop programs under their guidance ensuring that Stan's six decades of consciousness research continues to guide practitioners worldwide.

Grof® Breathwork is an experiential method of self-exploration developed by Stanislav and Christina Grof in the mid-1970s at the Esalen Institute. Built on insights from modern consciousness research, depth psychology, and spiritual practices, Grof Breathwork guides participants into holotropic states of consciousness through a combination of accelerated breathing, evocative music, and focused bodywork. This approach allows access to multiple levels of the psyche, facilitating deep self-discovery.
Individuals best suited for this work are those with a genuine curiosity about deep psychological and spiritual exploration who possess both a stable support system and baseline mental health. They should be willing to encounter difficult material while understanding that this is neither a quick fix nor a wellness trend, and must be prepared for the possibility that symptoms may temporarily intensify as unconscious material surfaces. Additionally, they need the capacity to commit to the full workshop duration
Grof® Breathwork is a transformative experience designed to facilitate deep self-exploration and healing. Due to the intense physical and emotional nature of the practice, certain health conditions may pose risks during breathwork sessions. To ensure the safety and well-being of all participants, you may review the healt considerations before registering for a workshop:

Shulgin Farm stands as one of the most significant sites in modern psychedelic history, where Alexander "Sasha" and Ann Shulgin conducted their groundbreaking research for over four decades.
Here, Sasha synthesized hundreds of novel compounds while keeping scrupulous records of their pharmacological profiles and experiential qualities.
Ann practiced as a Jungian therapist, providing psychedelic-assisted therapy and authoring pioneering therapeutic guidelines that continue to inform current practice.
Together they cultivated a community of researchers, practitioners, and visionaries who gathered at the Farm to explore the frontiers of human consciousness.

Following a visit to the lab, Stan wrote:
Sasha was and is admired and loved by thousands of people who benefited from his work and had their lives positively transformed by the substances he developed.
Those of us who had the chance to visit his home and see his laboratory could not believe that it was the place where he produced scores of psychoactive substances.
This place, probably not larger than twelve feet by twelve feet, looked more like the workshop of a medieval alchemist than a modern laboratory.
